In my occasional forays into AR concerts, I have come to the conclusion that Jerry pretty much stopped sliding and finger-picking.

Am I wrong? Please direct me to some shows.

Am I right? Anyone ever heard anything about it?

I loved when he did - he made some many evocative sounds that way. Who else would finger-pick a wah-wah setting?

The the beginning of Jerry's first solo and the ending of his last solo on Bird Song from the Fillmore East 4-28-71 (starting at 8:00 minutes in on "Ladies and Gentlemen ..." disc 1) features a lovely little finger-picked take on Shady Grove (same tune as Gypsy Davey). Both Bob and Jerry fingerpick their way through a sweet Dark Hollow, which follows Bird Song on the aforementioned commercial release.

I agree, the fingerpickin' and slide playing (any version of It Hurts Me Too from Europe 72 tour) added a whole another dimension to the tunes . . . little journeys into their musical roots.

Though it was famous (or infamous) for Bob's questionable slidework, I believe Jerry almost always played slide on Little Red Rooster.

Here he is in 1980: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=neKEPiDq2e8

I'm sure there are other examples. I'm sure there are many examples of him finger-picking too. Someone already mentioned Althea. I know I saw them play Corrina once (maybe '92?) that ended with a mini-MLB jam into drums with some nice finger-picking.

Here's a picture from what looks like 94-95, slide in hand -- http://www.gratefuldead.com/fanphotos/fuzzy-jerry-playing-slide

I'm no expert, but see this previous thread... he was playing fingerstyle on this Althea from '81...

Thanks. I remember that from recent times. Did someone figure out what that Cheeze-Whiz container is at the beginning? I guess I'm thinking in terms of using the slide like he did in Good Love/Lovelight/DS/WRS. He also did a lot of finger-picking in the 70's China Cats. Just seems like a lot of that went away after the break.

That is a can of Finger-ease, a guitar string silicon lube. Never tried it.

Are you a long-time picker/player? I played for a while some years ago, had to give it up, but now I'm picking it up again.

Oh no. I'm a fumble-fingered fooler-arounder guitar player. I just liked the spaces that opened up in the jams when he did stuff like that. Like on the DP 19 PITB when they are coming in for the landing.
